Describing The CHOSEN show is really tricky. Describing just Season One of the show the following is how the Producer states it:
"The CHOSEN is a fan-supported episodic series that creates an authentic and intimate picture of Jesus' life and ministry, seen through the eyes of the people who knew him. A charismatic fisherman struggling with debt. A troubled woman wrestling with demons. A gifted accountant ostracized from his family and people. The series has garnered praise from critics and fans alike for its historical and biblical accuracy, playful spirit, stirring drama, genuine humor, and disruptive impact."
I need to add something here about this show and the actors performing the roles... these people are "actors" and not the people they are portraying (i.e. Jesus - Jonathan Roumie). There are people on YouTube that are trashing the show because they think that the roles, or the show is not LIVING UP TO WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS! Dallas Jenkins has said more than once that this show is not to replace the actual HOLY BIBLE. I'm so surprised by the way people are commenting that Jonathan Roumie or someone else believes in something that is against what the Bible says. These ACTORS ARE NOT PERFECT PEOPLE, HOW CAN THEY BE HELD TO A HIGHER STANDARD THAN YOU OR ME?! Now back to the review...
When the Producer, Dallas Jenkins, states that the show is fan-supported it is because it's true! The show started out with some investors and after the first Episode aired fans started sending in money to keep the show free for those that wouldn't be able to see the show otherwise. After Season one the Episodes were put in theaters so that fans could "pay it forward" for supporting the next season.
I've been watching different film clips of the show to get a feeling of what to say about it. Instead of telling you about why I love this version of Jesus' story, and how Dallas Jenkins started this show, let me offer you links to different episodes from the Seasons of what has already been done. The Producers plan to do seven seasons in all. If you want to watch all the episodes in Seasons 1-4 all you have to do is download The Chosen APP. You can also purchase the episodes/seasons at a store near you or online. I'm attaching a link below for purchasing the show. Just click on the picture below to purchase any or all Seasons 1-4. Season 5 is coming out to the theaters right now as I'm typing this. I'm about to see Part One (Episodes 1&2) of Season 5 tomorrow in a theater to support the show, and am not sure if I'll want to come back to this post and add something more or not.
SEASON ONE: Episode 1: I Have Called You By Name
Two brothers struggle with their tax debts to Rome while a woman in the Red Quarter wrestles with her demons.
SEASON TWO: Episode 1: Thunder
Tension builds among the disciples as they wrestle with the increasing fame of Jesus in Samaria. Jesus rebukes Big James and John for their prejudice and, after a near-violent encounter, gives them a new nickname.
SEASON THREE: Episode 1: Homecoming
Jesus delivers the most life-altering sermon in history. The result? More followers, more enemies, and disciples ready to follow Jesus anywhere. Simon and Eden reunite, Matthew faces his past, and Andrew visits John the Baptist in prison.
SEASON FOUR: Episode 1: Promises
An intoxicating dance leads Herod to put an end to John the Baptizer, but no one can stop what—or Who—he’s ushered in. This Episode wasn't offered on YouTube so you have to download the APP if you want to watch this one.
I hope you give this show a chance. Christian or not I think it's a well produced show. While I'm on the subject of the story of Jesus Christ, I should mention that Mel Gibson's version of the Crucifixion, Passion of the Christ, is a very well made movie as well. This movie is a very close to real life depiction of how Jesus suffered for all of us. I'll also put a link below to this movie as well.
And by the way, Dallas Jenkin's Dad is the guy who wrote the original story "Left Behind" about the Rapture of the Church, and that has been made into more than one movie. This is another movie I highly recommend you watch. I'll leave a link below if you want to watch this movie.
If you'd like to watch a really well made "word for word" depiction of one of the Gospels of the Bible I highly recommend you watch The Gospel According to Matthew with Bruce Marchiano. I'll put a link below. Bruce has gone on to make more movies since this one. Bruce is working on The Gospel According to John now.
